UNIVERSIDAD AUTÓNOMA DE MADRID, SPAIN

THE PROJECT

The IMDEA Foundation is a non-profit organization with 7 research centres of excellence focused on seven strategic areas for society from a business, scientific and technological point of view.

CCCRA has been hired to develop the Nanoscience Institute in Madrid. IMDEA Nanoscience works for the promotion and attraction of talent in strategic areas of Nanoscience, where physics, chemistry, biology, medicine and engineering come together, conducting research of excellence.

Moreover, this interdisciplinary research center aspires to be a dynamic and flexible platform for fostering the creation of new internationally competitive research groups. By combining the expertise of some of the most brilliant scientists in Madrid, who are dedicated to exploring the fundamentals of nanoscience with renowned researchers.

All our multidisciplinary team was involved in the design of this singular building, with 8.200 m2 of total built area over a 4.700 m2 plot area develops 30 different specialised laboratories and it has been designed under the most demanding principles of design and sustainability.

THE NUMBER

8.200 SQM

Special features of the Project:

  • The structure, particularly the foundations, has been designed to ensure the proper functioning of the different microscopes, with optimal vibration isolation achieved through an elastic support system to prevent movement transfer.
  • High-level facility requirements have been incorporated for the laboratories, including special features for clean room design and dedicated air filtering systems.
  • Additionally, construction has been carefully planned to ensure maximum cleanliness, promoting a sterile environment.

The building’s most iconic feature is a captivating two-layered pattern, meticulously designed mesh installed on its facade. This innovative solution serves a dual purpose, filtering the sun’s radiation while effectively unify the façade by hiding the exterior perimeter galleries necessary for the correct maintenance of the facilities that, for functional and security reasons, circulate around the outside of the building.

By enhancing efficiency and reducing energy consumption, this unique pattern not only adds to the building’s aesthetic appeal but also symbolizes a proton’s iconic bubble that dynamically changes as you move closer or farther away.

This building represents the perfect combination of innovation and sustainability, where cutting-edge technology flourishes and meticulous attention is given to detail. It is truly an example of excellence in design and sustainability.
